I like stuff.
I’m a product designer so I’m particular about my things. I’m also an aspiring minimalist, so what I have, has to count.
I like to have high quality things that work and last. I’d much rather pay more and shop less.
Running a business yourself often bleeds into your personal life, and I’ve found that my interest in efficiency, gear and systems all crosses over.
I use a lot of tools to get my daily work done, and to get my life lived. Here's some of my favorites:
Macbook Pro 15”
I have one of last non-retina models and bought it from the Apple re-furb section, as I always do. It’s jammed full of ram and has an upgraded harddrive (yes, I’m a computer geek), and it’s a serious workhorse. I am eyeing the Macbook Air models, though and wondering if I could really give up the speed and storage for the lightweight option.
iPad mini retina
When I don’t need to make technical drawings or edit photos or video, I can do almost everything I need with this little tablet. I got a cheap external keyboard and stand from amazon and can work from anywhere, without lugging around the 15” laptop.
(Are you seeing an Apple pattern here? Yup, I’ve bought into the system. It just works for me. I’m sure there’s other great options, but Apple is for me.)
The camera is why I got this model, and I will use it for almost all my business photography. I can run 80% of my business from this little bugger and can take photos and videos that are passable for marketing stuff. It’s far from convenient to work on, but the convenience of carrying it is unbeatable. Best mobile work experience? Doing customer service from a park in Saigon, from my iPhone.
Stand up Desk
I’d love a fancy motorized set up someday, but for now I have a wire shelf unit with a zip-tied Ikea keyboard holder. It’s adjustable, and mobile (there’s wheels) and above all functional and cheap. Here's a good option.
Much, much more coming here soon!
Just so you know - most of these links to products are affiliate links. That means I will get a small commission if you buy something from that link. It won't cost you any more. The commissions support my work here on Sketch to Shelf.
