About Jed

Have you ever wished you could just leave your job?

Just walk out the door and never come back?

Of course you have, but maybe you were conflicted. Quitting would give you more freedom and happiness, but then what would you do? How would you survive?

I’ve been there. So I started my own company. And now I want to help you start your company too.

I’m Jed Crystal, and I’m a product designer and an entrepreneur. I’ve designed products for garage startups to international brands, and have helped each grow their business by designing and developing unique products.

But I wanted more control of my creative output and my time. After 20 years of corporate and freelance design work, I realized that building my own business was the key to my creative, financial and schedule freedom.

So I made some cat beds.

And then some more cat beds, and bowls and scratchers too.  Over 8 years ago I launched Hepper.com, and am still supplying cute cats with comfy beds around the world.

Today I am in full control of my time, make a livable salary, and most importantly am having fun making great stuff.

Why then, make this Sketch to Shelf site? Simply, Sketch to Shelf is the creative business resource I wish I had.

By building and running my pet products company solo, I have learned everything from scratch. I have literally had my hands on every step of the business, from initial concept sketches to product development to sourcing, importing, warehousing to eCommerce website creation to shipping and most recently online marketing and sales.

I’ve figured all this out on my own – stubbornly or stupidly – and had a lot of trial and error along the way.

From the beginning I had always wished that there was a checklist that I could just follow.

A guide along the way, a little bit of hand holding and someone just to bounce ideas off of.  This is why Sketch to Shelf was born.  My goal now is to help you build your business the smart way, by learning from my experiences and mistakes, so that you never have to take the J.O.B. and can always live your life the way you want.
